Goldberg, Wright win downhill titles in US Alpine Championships at Sugarloaf
Carrabassett Valley native Sam Morse finishes in fourth place.
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, MAINE—With calm winds and sunny skies making yesterday’s weather delays a distant memory, the nation’s fastest skiers launched themselves down the legendary Narrow Gauge trail at Sugarloaf, with top speeds reaching nearly 90 miles per hour in the downhill portion of this week’s U.S. Alpine Championships.
In the end it was defending national champion and U.S. Ski Team veteran Jared Goldberg who clocked the fastest time of the day at 1 minute, 10.34 seconds. Goldberg edged out a pair of Canadians – Jeffrey Read and Broderick Thompson, who finished in second (1:10.64) and third place (1:10.65), respectively.
Carrabassett Valley native and hometown hero Sam Morse finished one spot off the podium in fourth place with a time of 1:11.15.
On the women’s side Isabella Wright from Salt Lake City, Utah took home the championship with a time of 1:12.83. Wright beat out fellow 2022 US Olympic teammates Jaqueline Wiles and Keely Cashman, who finished in 1:13.59 and 1:13.62, respectively.
Morse, a graduate of Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA), was joined by current CVA students Abby Byers, Althea Noyes and Josie Alexander, who finished in 17th (1:18.72), 18th (1:18.76), and 25th place (1:21.61), respectively.
As the country’s most prestigious domestic alpine ski racing event, the US Alpine Championships give up-and-coming athletes looking to advance their position on the U.S. Ski Team a chance to face off against A-Team stars.
This is the eighth time Sugarloaf has played host to the championships, having previously done so in 1996, 1997, 2006, 2008, 2015, 2017, and 2019.
Racing continues tomorrow, with the men’s and women’s Super-G national championship.
