Reviewing the Widowmaker

by Gabrielle Martin

A stop at the Widowmaker is something of a Sugarloaf rite of passage. The Widowmaker is an iconic after-ski spot with an unbeatable atmosphere, guaranteeing good vibes, game-changing grub, and great views.

Located at the top of the Base Lodge, this spacious hub is a highlight of the mountain’s dining scene, featuring a full bar with 20 beers on tap—all brewed right here in the great state of Maine—plus an all-new menu of updated après classics.

App Attack

Introducing the Widowmaker’s Crispy Brussel Sprouts ($14), prepared with bacon and served with cheese sauce. This is a first course ready to steal the show: even little Loafers will love these bacon-roasted, bite-sized, and browned-to-perfection sprouts, which pair well with virtually any main or meal.

Buffalo chicken totchos
Buffalo chicken totchos

Next up, it’s time for loaded Totchos, or tater tot nachos (yes, you read that right)—and can choose your fighter: opt for original ($16), BBQ ($19), or Buffalo chicken ($19).

  • Original tots come with candied jalapenos, cheese sauce, sour cream, pico de gallo, and pickled onions.
  • BBQ tots are served with BBQ pulled pork, candied jalapenos, cheese sauce, pickled onion, and scallions.
  • Buffalo chicken totchos are tots topped with Buffalo chicken, gorgonzola, jalapeno, pickled onions, and scallions.

Whatever way you take your totchos, these divine dishes blend together two top-tier comfort foods to create the ultimate après appetizer.

Bombs, Sandwiches, and Smash Burgers, Oh My!

All Bombs, Sandwiches, and Smash Burgers—your choice of beef, chicken, or Beyond burger—are served with chips, which can be upgraded to French fries, tots, or a side salad for $4 each.

Nothing will quite warm your belly like The Widowmaker’s Kielbasa Bomb ($18), a hearty entrée that very well may become your go-to cold weather comfort food. This sandwich—filled with grilled spicy Polish sausage, onions, peppers, and mustard—is full of flavor you’ll want to savor.

The Meat Wagon

Meanwhile, there’s the Meat Wagon ($26), a mountain of a burger piled high with bacon, BBQ pulled pork, bacon, crispy onion straws, and a fried egg–and it's egg-celent. I could tell you more, but they say a picture is worth a thousand words, so feast your eyes above.

From The Bar

Ask your server about our 20 beers on tap with additional rotating drafts and sours, plus the daily Shift Drink!

You better believe they’re got Bloodys, coming in classic, spicy (prepared with jalapeno simple syrup), garden variety (Effin Cucumber), or Hale Mary (Del Maguey Vida mescal, Tito’s Vodka, and lemon); the Widowmaker has also added to their selection of Signature Drinks to include a Blueberry Vodka Spritzer ($12 with Cold River Blueberry, blueberry simple, and soda) and a Northbound Mule ($12 with Crown Royal Apple, ginger beer).

Peppermint Patty

Now welcoming some Warm Cocktails to the mix: have your hot chocolate served Peppermint Patty ($12 with Dr. Mcgillicuddy’s) or Skyline ($12 with RumChata) style, and for our caffeine fiends, ask about the SuperQuad ($12 with Bailey’s, Jameson, Kahlua).

Kids’ Corner

The Widowmaker also has fare for our little Loafers, including a burger ($14), a chicken sammy ($14), meatballs and marinara ($14), or tasty tenders ($12).

In Review

The new menu items at the Widowmaker are hearty, savory, and tasty options served in sizeable portions. They compliment the relaxed, open, and warm atmosphere of The Widowmaker, which is why it is (and always has been) the perfect place for lunch. It's an equally great way to end the day; after all, everybody knows that when the lift stops spinning, the party is just getting started–and that's when you send it over to the Widowmaker for good eats, drinks, and live après entertainment (happening most Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays throughout the season).
