CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine - Following historic snowfall that deposited 50" of snow at Sugarloaf during the first two weeks of March, the resort made history today with the opening of its new Burnt Mountain Cat Skiing operation. It was also the first time all season that Sugarloaf's adjacent peak, Burnt Mountain, opened to skiers and riders.

Tickets for the inaugural cat rides sold out within hours of announcing opening plans on Wednesday, and all available seats for Saturday and Sunday were reserved by 9am on Thursday.  

As a keepsake from the inaugural Burnt Mountain Cat Skiing experience, every guest who booked a seat for Friday also received a free limited-edition Cat Skiing t-shirt.  

After this weekend, the resort plans to operate Cat Skiing on Saturdays and Sundays, from 9:30am - 2:30pm, as long as snow conditions and weather permit.  

Burnt Mountain Cat Skiing provides skiers and snowboarders the opportunity to access Sugarloaf's newest and most remote terrain on Burnt Mountain via snow cat. This is Maine's first cat skiing operation, one of only a handful east of the Rocky Mountains.  

Passengers travel in snow cats equipped to carry 10 passengers and climb over 1.5 miles and 1400 vertical feet to the upper elevations of Burnt Mountain. At the top, skiers and riders have access to over 100 acres of powder filled glades, including Androscoggin, Little Androscoggin, and the all-new Kennebec glade.  

Space on the cats are limited and guests need to reserve seats in advance. Prices range from $20-$30 per seat, depending on time of day. Reservations can be made online at www.sugarloaf.com/cat-skiing, or by phone - all tickets must be picked up at the Burnt Mountain Cat Skiing desk in the Sugarloaf Base Lodge.   

The Burnt Mountain experience is recommended for expert skiers and riders only. Anyone unfamiliar with the Burnt Mountain terrain is encouraged to visit Ski Patrol at the top of the Androscoggin Glade to ask questions.
