Five Sugarloafers tapped for ESPN X-Games this week
Olympian Seth Wescott and X-Games veteran Dan Marion top list of invitees
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – The top winter athletes from around the world will gather in Aspen, Colorado this weekend for the 14th annual ESPN Winter X-Games, and five athletes from Sugarloaf are among those who have been invited to compete. All five athletes are graduates of Carrabassett Valley Academy (CVA), the world renowned ski and snowboard academy located at the base of Sugarloaf.
Leading the way will be Olympic Gold Medalist Seth Wescott of Carrabassett Valley, who will compete in snowboardcross in a precursor to the upcoming Winter Olympics in Vancouver in February. Wescott is an eight-time X-Games medalist and is the defending Olympic Gold Medalist in snowboardcross. He was officially named to the 2010 US Olympic team on Monday.
Nineteen-year-old Alex Tuttle of Stratton also received an invitation to compete in snowboardcross alongside Wescott, but will miss the games to compete in a NorAm event in British Columbia, which will ultimately help him earn enough points to compete on next year’s World Cup circuit.
Sugarloaf and CVA will be represented by three athletes in skier halfpipe, with 22 year old Dan Marion leading the way. Marion, a native of Windham, ME, will be competing in his fifth X-Games, and has been a consistent top-ten finisher in this year’s Winter Dew Tour, a premier freestyle skiing and snowboarding tour offering up more than $1.5 million in prizes. Joining Marion in skier halfpipe will be CVA alumni Matt Duhamel and Banks Gilberti, who graduated from the Academy in 2009 and 2008 respectively. Duhamel is a native of San Francisco, and Gilberti hails from Sun Valley, Idaho.
Practice in the Superpipe kicks off on Thursday, Jan 28 and continues on Friday. Qualifiers are on Saturday and finals begin on Sunday at 7pm EST. Snowboardcross qualifiers are on Friday, Jan 29 and finals are on Saturday at 4pm EST. Both finals will be broadcast live on ESPN 2.
In the event’s history a total of ten CVA students and alumni have qualified for the X Games.
