Jeff Seavey wins State of Maine Championship in two-hole playoff

Shawn Warren finishes in second; Mark Plummer is top amateur

CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – After a runner-up finish in last year’s tournament, Jeff Seavey of the Samoset Resort won his first State of Maine Championship at the Sugarloaf Golf Club today after sinking a putt for par on the second playoff hole with Shawn Warren of Falmouth Country Club.

Seavey and Warren were tied at two-over for the tournament after 36 holes today and went into a sudden-death playoff starting on number ten. After both made par on the first playoff hole, Seavey knocked his drive to within 20 feet on the par three eleventh, while Warren sailed his drive beyond the green and into the woods. Seavey two-putted for par and the championship.

After a blistering first round score of 68, Warren struggled a bit on the second day of the tournament but made a birdie on the final hole of regulation to score a 78. Seavey bogeyed the final hole of regulation, giving him a 75 and forcing the playoff.

Three players finished one stroke back, including four-time champion Mark Plummer who finished as the top amateur in the tournament at plus-three. Plummer was nearly a part of the playoff with Seavey and Warren, but his par putt on the final hole of the day missed by two inches. Former champion John Hickson of Dick’s Sporting Goods and David Grygiel of the Bethel Inn and Country Club also finished at three over.

Brandon Wohl was the only other amateur to finish in the top ten after a second-day 73 left him tied for sixth at plus-four with Jim Fairbanks of Nonesuch River Golf Club

Defending champion Mike Worroll of Purpoodock Golf Club finished the tournament alone in eighth place at plus-five. Ben Morey of Spring Meadows Golf Club, Michael Dugas of JW Parks Golf Course and Gregory Sandell of Boothbay Country Club shared ninth place at plus-seven.

The 36-hole stroke play tournament matches up Maine’s best professional and amateur golfers in junior, senior, and 18-50 year-old categories as they vie for cash, prizes, and ultimate bragging rights as Maine’s top golfer. In order to compete in the professional category, golfers must be a member of the Maine Chapter of the New England PGA or registered apprentice.  All Maine residents are eligible to compete in the amateur category.
