The Skyline lift is slated to receive a computer programming upgrade this morning, and therefore will not be scheduled to run. Experts from Dopelmayr will be on hand perform the upgrade, and the lift may be back up and running as early as mid-day.
During the recent power outages, our Lift Mechanics discovered that Skyline's diesel back-up motor was not sending the appropriate amount of power to run the lift efficiently when operating on the back-up power system. Similarly to how the engine in your car gets sluggish if you don't apply enough pressure to the accelerator when going up a steep hill, the diesel back-up on Skyline was getting bogged down when engaged.
The lift mechanics traced the source of the problem back to the computer system that controls the lift.
Over the years, as chairlifts have evolved and developed superior safety mechanisms, they've also become more technologically equipped and reliant on computer software-just like the cars that we drive. Back in the day, everyone had a friend, neighbor, or uncle who could repair just about anything on your vehicle without having to take it to the shop. Nowadays, that's not the case; more and more often when you experience vehicle trouble, you end up needing to pay a visit to the dealership.
While our Lift Maintenance Department has the equipment and capabilities to repair most problems as they arise, computer programming is not their expertise. Fortunately Doppelmayr is equipped with a team of experts who create and oversee all the computer programming that goes into powering their newer lift models, and will be sending a few of these folks over to reprogram the computer in Skyline.
The Skyline lift is equipped with three power units: the primary motor which operates the lift 99% of the time, the optional diesel back-up motor which can be used to operate the lift in the event of a power outage, and the tertiary auxiliary back-up motor which would be used as an alternative power source for lift evacuation. The only power unit effected by the glitch in computer programming is the diesel back-up.
Doppelmayer will begin work on the computer this morning, and anticipate having the lift back open to the public by early afternoon.
