2/1 - The 2nd Annual Downtown Showdown

The 2nd Annual Downtown Showdown went down in spectacular fashion on Saturday night, with the region's top skiers and riders doing battle in New England's biggest urban rail event. The features included a Sugarloaf down rail, a Sunday River down-flat-down rail, and a custom Red Bull cannon box. It was a Sugarloaf sweep for skiers, with Sugarloafers Jeremy Veillieux, Max Twaddel, and Tyler Shores taking the top three spots. Veillieux took first and went home with a cool $500 cash, plus a super-swanky Oakley watch.

Many thanks go out to all of the spectators who braved the cold, all of the competitors who put on an incredible show, and to the City of Portland who made the whole event possible. It was a ton of fun and we can't wait to see you all again next year!

1/8 - Qualify for the Downtown Showdown at the BYO Rail Jam!

In case you haven't heard, Sugarloaf and Sunday River are bringing back The Downtown Showdown for year number two on Saturday, January 30. Last year nearly 2000 people turned out for what proved to be the biggest urban rail event in New England, and this year is sure to be bigger and better than ever. The field of competitors is limited to a select group, and your chance to join them will be at the BYO Rail Jam on Jan 16. Just like last year, the top skier and top snowboarder will both automatically qualify to represent Sugarloaf at the Downtown Showdown. Last year's qualifiers Benjamin Bisson and Tyler Shores both ended up advancing to the finals in Portland, and this year it could be you.

Check out the Downtown Showdown web site for more info, and stop by the Sugarloaf Board Room to sign up for the BYO Rail Jam today.

12/27 - The BYO Rail Jam - January 16

For our first rail jam of the season, we tossed around a bunch of ideas (some better than others) of what we should do for a setup. We could never all quite agree so we figured we'd toss it out to you guys and let you design the exact venue that you want to see. We're calling it the BYO (Build-Your-Own) Rail Jam, and whoever comes up with the winning design gets free entry into the event and gets to bark orders at the STP crew while we construct your masterpiece. The BYO Rail Jam goes down on Jan. 16, so check out our list of features and get crackin.

Here’s a list of the features we have available:

  • Boxes:
One 4ft tall, 22ft long flat box
    Two 20 ft flat boxes
    One 20 ft up box
    Two 8ft low flat boxes
One 16ft flat box with ledges
    One 24ft flat-down box
Two 16 ft low flat boxes
    One 16ft x 4ft “dance floor” box
    One 20ft down box
  • Rails:
One 26ft flat-down-flat round bar rail
One 20ft flat round bar rail
One 20 ft down round bar rail
    Two 22ft flat rails
    Three 16ft flat rails
    One 32ft flat-down rail
    One 22ft flat-down rail
    One 32ft A-Frame rail
    Three 12ft flat rails
  • Miscellaneous:
One 16ft wide, 7ft tall wall ride
    One Skidder tire
    Three single barrel bonks
    One double barrel bonk

 A few things to remember:

  • The Rail Jam venue is the same as always, above the beach right in front of the Base Lodge (see picture below). This can't change.
  • There are riders of varying ability levels at all of our rail jams, so keep the little groms in mind for your design.
  • To submit your design you can either explain in words (english please) or draw it, and post it to our discussion in the Sugarloaf Online Community. Or you can email it straight to park boss Jake at jcharles@sugarloaf.com.

So that's it. BYO Rail Jam. Bring it.

12/26 - Sidewinder superb-ness

Sidewinder is now officially open and the reviews we're hearing are some of the best yet. One Facebook fan said that it's "Probably the best jump line at sugarloaf ever. So much fun." We're inclined to agree. Jake and Norton created what might be the first ever SBX-jump line-rail garden hybrid park in history, ensuring a little early season fun no matter what your preferred flavor. The top section features SBX style banked turns and rollers, which lead into a medium-sized three pack jump line, followed by a jib setup with four features to choose from. Check out some video that we threw together yesterday, and come check it out for yourself!

12/10 - Early Season Setup

Our early season mini-park is in full swing and the reviews we've been hearing have been extremely positive so far. The setup right now includes a single barrel down rail, down box, flat rail, flat box and a slanted flat box, and we may mix things up a bit for the weekend as well. Jake turned on his new video camera during the setup last weekend, and we bumped the speed up to about 1000x so you can watch the entire park go up in three minutes. Check it out and stay tuned for updates for the weekend.

12/4 - Features for the weekend!

Good news ladies and gents! Jake and Tim are headed up on the mountain tomorrow morning to set up some features for the weekend to make all of your jibbing dreams come true. Features will be set up on Tote Road, above the intersection with Pinch. They're keeping the precise features a surprise for now, but they might include some of these....

12/3 - Park Update - Jibs for the weekend?

Hi all,

Rain is a serious bummer but we're not letting it get us down! We're still hoping to have a fun jib park set up for you all on Tote Road by the weekend, and if the cold weather can stick around for a little while a full park shouldn't be too far behind. Check back for an update on Saturday morning.

In the meantime, we hope you're drooling over the photo of the new jib features on our main park page! Yes that's right - 2 flat boxes, a down rail, an elevator box, a single-barrel flat rail, a single-barrel down rail, a flat-bar down rail, and a single-barrel DFD - all new and just for you! Jake and Time are working on plywood and paint right now, so look for some of these to deput soon as we put features on the hill. We hae big plans this winter, so get up here for some good times!

11/19 - What's on tap for 09/10

In 08/09 we turned the Sugarloaf park scene on its head, with three brand new parks, a completely redesigned Superpipe, and vastly improved Stomping Grounds. We'll keep building on that theme for 09/10, with some great improvements in our snowmaking, some new features, and some new enthusiastic staff ready to shake things up.

Over the summer we added two brand new snowmaking lines - one to the Superpip and another on Sidewinder, and we lined Sidewinder from top to bottom with Boyne Low-E Fan Guns. The new lines mean that we're drawing water from a different location this year when we make snow on these two bad-larries, which means we can dedicate more guns for a longer period of time. Look for both of these to be open faster and in better condition than ever before.

All of our jib features got a face lift over the summer with fresh paint and new plywood, and we're adding to our arsenal as well, including three new boxes, a couple of flat rails, and a handful of single barrell rails.

Staff-wise, we bid a fond farewell to our Park Manager Jonny Warren, who is on to new adventures, and will be looking to veterans Jake Charles and Tim Norton to run the show this year. Both are overflowing with enthusiasm, creativity, and skill and we're as pumped as ever for what's in store this season.

In other news, we scored some killer footage in this year's Meathead Films production Wild Stallions, and are excited to work together with them again this year. Check out the trailer, and think COLD.

4/27 - The Meatheads come to Sugarloaf

When Meathead Films needed a location to nail some killer spring footage for next year's release, they pointed the Meatwagon north and headed straight for Sugarloaf. Geoff, Chris and about 10 other Meatheads including Radio Ron and Hammer have spent the past four days filming the east coast's most perfect spring bumps on Bubblecuffer and Winter's Way, a sick setup up on the air hill, and a few other juicy secrets that you'll have to wait until next fall to find out. Check out some of the pics, and check out www.meatheadfilms.com for info on their next release.
