CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine (May 5, 2013) – One hundred eighty nine days after it began, Sugarloaf’s ski season finally came to an end today, with the final group of skiers and riders loading the chairlift at 3:50pm under sunny skies and with temperatures in the mid-70s.
After a long, cold winter that saw more than 15 feet of snow blanket the slopes, Maine’s 2012-13 ski season will come to a close on Monday, May 5, when Sugarloaf celebrates its final day of skiing.
More than 50 skiers and snowboarders took the plunge as Sugarloaf hosted the first ever East Coast Pond Skimming Championship on Saturday, April 20.
Even though it says spring on the calendar, winter is clearly far from over at the East’s largest ski area. Sugarloaf received two inches of new snow this morning and the resort is currently 100 percent open, including the legendary Backside Snowfields.
