More than 1000 runners set to compete in 31st Annual Sugarloaf Marathon and 15k this weekend
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – More than 1000 runners from around the country are set to compete in the 31st Annual Sugarloaf Marathon and 15k on Sunday, May 19.
Presented by Landry-French Construction Company, the Sugarloaf Marathon is one of Maine’s premier running events, and the oldest continuously run marathon in the state. A combined 1042 runners are registered to compete in the marathon and 15k, with competitors travelling from as far away as Alaska to run this year’s race.
As an official qualifying race for the Boston Marathon certified by the United States Track and Field Association (USATF), the Sugarloaf Marathon is popular among running enthusiasts. Despite its mountainous setting the course is primarily flat or downhill, and ends with a gradual 16 mile descent. Marathon runners regularly record personal-best times at Sugarloaf.
The Sugarloaf Marathon provides runners with spectacular views of the surrounding mountain ranges and the Carrabassett River. Wildlife sightings are common, as runners share the roads and environment with the area’s abundant population of moose and deer.
Proceeds from the Sugarloaf Marathon and 15k go to the Sugarloaf Region Charitable Trust, which is a private, nonprofit trust dedicated to improving the quality of life for the communities that make up the Sugarloaf Area. Last year the marathon raised more than $10,000 for the Trust, which was distributed to deserving organizations in the Sugarloaf area.
The top three men and women in each race receive cash prizes, and all entrants receive a t-shirt, post-race breakfast, massage, and a finisher’s medal. An all-you-can-eat pasta dinner will be served in the King Pine Room in the Base Lodge the Saturday evening before the race, from 5 to 8 p.m.
Check-in and packet pick-up for registered runners will take place from 2-8pm on Saturday, May 18 in the Sugarloaf Base Lodge. Lodging is available at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel for the marathon for $96 per person, per night. Call 1.800 THE LOAF or visit www.sugarloaf.com for reservations and more information.
Complete results and high-resolution photos will be available for media use immediately following the conclusion of the races on Sunday at www.sugarloaf.com/media. For photos of last year’s marathon, click here.
