Shawn Warren leads State of Maine Championships after first round 68
Plummer, Fairbanks tied for second at even-par 72
CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Shawn Warren of Falmouth Country Club took a four-stroke lead after the first day of the State of Maine Championships at the Sugarloaf Golf Club, with a four-under par 68. Jeff Seavey of Samoset Resort finished the day in second place with a one-under par 71. Seavey and Warren were the only players under par after day one, and Warren’s 68 missed the course record of 67 by just one stroke.
Jim Fairbanks of Nonesuch River Golf Club and amateur Mark Plummer sit tied in third place at even-par 72. Plummer is a four-time State of Maine Champion and thirteen-time Maine Amateur Champion.
After an even-par 36 on the front nine, Warren shot a blistering 32 on the back-nine including birdies on holes 10, 11, and 13, three of the five holes in Sugarloaf’s famous “String of Pearls.” Warren registered just one bogey on the day, a four on the par-three eighth.
Plummer leads all amateurs after day one; the former champ enjoyed a relatively consistent day, making to birdies and two bogeys to come in at even par. Fairbanks’ round was more of a rollercoaster, with four bogeys and four birdies, including three birdies on the back nine.
Defending tournament champion Mike Worroll of Purpooduck Golf Club is part of a four-way tie for sixth place with a two-over 74, while five-time champion Bob Darling of Fox Ridge Golf Club sits in three-way tie for 17th place after a five-over 77 on day one. 2007 champion John Hickson is also in the hunt after a four-over 76 left him in a four-way tie for 13th place.
Day one proved to be a good one for amateurs, with four in the top ten going into the final round. Plummer led the way, while amateur Mike Doran sits alone in fourth place after a one-over 73. Brandon Wohl and Jay Plourd are both part of a three-way tie for eighth after rounds of 75.
The Sugarloaf Golf Club lived up to its reputation as one of Maine’s toughest courses as golfers battled fast greens and challenging pin placements throughout the day. The ninth hole in particular gave many players fits, with 50 players scoring a bogey or worse, 26 making par, and only two managing birdies.
The 36-hole stroke play tournament matches up Maine’s best professional and amateur golfers in junior, senior, and 18-50 year-old categories as they vie for cash, prizes, and ultimate bragging rights as Maine’s top golfer. In order to compete in the professional category, golfers must be a member of the Maine Chapter of the New England PGA or registered apprentice. All Maine residents are eligible to compete in the amateur category.
